Spinal Meningitis

Meningitis, or spinal meningitis, is an inflammation of the lining within the brain. It is almost always caused by a bacterial or viral infection of the spinal fluid, and is left untreated, can kill an infant in 24 hours.

Viral meningitis is the more common of the two, and is much less likely to cause permanent spinal or brain damage. Because antibiotics cannot treat viral meningitis, very few malpractice cases are filed. It’s relatively a mild sickness, and clears up within a week or two without specific medical treatment.

Bacterial meningitis is an extremely serious illness that requires immediate medical care. If not treated quickly, permanent brain damage or even death can occur within hours. The most common form of medical malpractice involving bacterial meningitis is through delayed diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
